Biography
Canadian based, Czech-born pianist Markéta Ornova is praised for her sensitivity of tone and innovative concert programming. Markéta is particularly passionate about contemporary music, collaborative work with voice, and interdisciplinary performance. She is interested in creating performances that challenge the theatrical-frame of a recital, and the possibilities this creates in engaging with larger cultural questions surrounding performance, community and the arts.
An enthusiastic performer of contemporary music, Markéta loves working directly with composers on their works. She worked with composers Philippe Leroux, Ana Sokolović, Juliet Palmer and Murray Shafer on their works, and has worked closely with conductor Veronique Lacroix (ECM+) on contemporary music performance. Markéta has had the pleasure of working with many Toronto-based contemporary music organisations, including Tapestry Opera, Caution-Tape Sound Collective, interdisciplinary performance art/music collective Din of Shadows, and the Canadian Marginalized Art Song Project.
An alumni of the Banff Center, Markéta was on staff at the Banff Centre’s Opera in the 21st Century, as the Assistant Music Director for ChamberWerx. She also participated in the Banff Center’s Musicians in Residence program in 2018, where she focused on the vocal music of Wolfgang Rihm.
In addition to her extensive musical training, Markéta holds a Bachelor of Arts (Honors) degree in philosophy from The Johns Hopkins University and has pursued graduate studies in mathematics at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Markéta is a graduate of The Glenn Gould School and is currently pursuing a Doctor of Musical Arts at the University of Toronto.
